Unit 4 - Sorting Out
Habitat vs. Ecosystems
To better understand the difference between habitats and ecosystems, we created this venn diagram. It helped us to clearly understand the similarities and differences of each system.
Once we were finished, we had the understanding that habitats are organisms of the same population in living in the same place within a community. The ecosystem is a larger community with living and non-living organisms that participate in a food chain. |
Ecosystem Visual Harvesting
This strategy is using visuals and words to express the overall meaning of research, lecture, or ideas. Students were asked to complete an Inquiry Chart and create a visual harvesting poster of their big ideas.
These were examples used to show the difference of styles before students created their own posters. Hani suggested that the middle one was the best for students who didn't know too much English, because there were lots of pictures and not so many words. You could get the meaning easily. I "like" his observation.

The creative process to sorting out which ideas are the most important and how they are connnected to our prior learning.
Here are our group posters. Kou made a great connection to poster. He once read a Chinese myth that a giant ruled the world and his water was the blood. When he died, the water spilled from his body, which explains how we got the oceans. Kou remembered this story and thought it was a great connection to ecosystems. I agree!
Biome Trioramas
To sort out our understanding between habitats, ecosystems, and biomes, we created biome trioramas to show these unique concepts. Here we are peer reviewing each other's projects and presenting our findings to the class.
